Smokey and Jay were having a fun little evening of gaming. Unfortunately, the weather decided to hasten its efforts to turn nasty, resulting in a blizzard hitting earlier than the forecast predicted. Not one to permit his friend to go out in it, Smokey offered Jay a bed for the night. Of course... when it comes to dragons, 'bed' is a loosely applicable term. Jay certainly doesn't mind though.

This is a little present for a sweet lil blanket-butt friend, Jay. He's had a bit of a rough time of things lately so I hope this finds him well.

The room was filled with the electronic sounds of digital interactive entertainment. Two figures sat facing the television, leaning one way or the other as they worked their thumbs over the controls they held. The battle had reached a fevered pitch. Neither one could sit still or remain quiet. Their voices were no doubt annoying the neighbors but they didn't care, they were having fun.

"I'm gonna get you!" Jay said, the skunk grinning strongly as he pressed the attack.

"Stop it! No fair beating up on me!" Smokey shot back.

The dragon was not terribly skilled at fighting games, even one as colorful and paradoxically cheerful as this most recent entry into the series. Mega Bash Brothers just wasn't his game, but he still enjoyed a little friendly competition. Even if his "trash talk" suggested otherwise. And it wasn't really something that fit the definition of "trash talk".

"That's the whole point! I gotta do it! So either practice more so you can beat me up or stop crying about it!" the skunk said, nudging his friend with an elbow.

"Meany!" Smokey shouted, unable to think of any sort of good come back.

The battle raged on, but only for a few moments. Fairly soon, the iconic sound of a 'Final Bash' filled the room and the blue dragon cried out in dismay as his character was sent careening off the screen as though he had been shot out of a cannon. There came the telltale 'explosion' signifying that there was no recovery coming and the match ended. Jay had soundly whipped him, and with three out of five stocks remaining.

"And that's game. You're getting better. Not by much, but you're actually getting better." Jay said, dropping the controller in his lap before leaning against his friend.

"Yeah, better at running away. I just don't have the mind for this kind of game. I can't think that fast and react the way you do." Smokey said.

"Just gotta practice, learn how to read the other character. Pretty soon, you'll be able to see what I'm doing before it even registers with me." Jay replied.

"Maybe. But not tonight. Anyway, it's getting late. I probably should let you head back home." the dragon said.

He put his controller down on the coffee table after using it to command the console to switch off. The television went dark before turning solid blue to signify no signal. Then, it went dark again, this time because it had been turned off.

"Yeah, I suppose I should. Don't wanna keep you up too late." Jay said, turning to look out the window.

The sight was not a terribly inviting one. A curtain of white fell, covering the world outside in a layer of silent fury. The wind had picked up, making it look extra inhospitable. Smokey took note of the snowstorm swirling away outside and frowned.

"Well, that's just great. It got here even sooner than they predicted." he said.

"Yeah. I was hoping to get home before this hit. I guess I got too carried away kickin' your butt." Jay said with a laugh.

"I got carried away too," Smokey said, "Look, I can't let you go out in that. It's just too nasty out there. You should stay the night."

"Oh please. It's not that bad. And it's not like I can't deal with a little cold. I'm a lot fuzzier than you after all. There's a reason why people call skunks 'blanket butts' after all." Jay replied, grinning.

"Dude, look at it. It's practically a blizzard. You've got five blocks to walk to get home. You'll freeze, I don't care how much fluff you've got." the dragon said, sounding concerned.

"Hey, I didn't say I'd enjoy it. I'm not really looking forward to it if I'm honest. But I can handle it." the skunk said as he walked to the front closet, pulling his heavy coat out to slip into.

"Jay, no. I can't let you do it. You can stay here the night. It'll be fine. Please. I insist." Smokey said, moving to stand in front of the door, hoping to block access.

The black and white striped fellow sighed and looked up at the slightly taller blue drake. He stopped his preparation, feeling his own hesitance begin to get the better of him.

"You've only got one bed, and knowing you, you'll insist I take it while you're out here on the couch. And I've heard how much you hate sleeping on that evil thing. It grabs hold of you and doesn't let go, then when you finally do wrench yourself free, you talk about how it messes up your back." Jay said.

"Yeah... that's all true. I wouldn't wanna make you sleep on the couch," Smokey said as he looked away while trying to figure out a solution, lifting his gaze once more as it occurred to him, "You know... I could always do the thing. I know how much you like it."
